CONFIRM YOUR LOCATION

The location of your place of worship needs to meet legislative and regulatory requirements, and there are some specific Council zones where places of public worship aren’t allowed. If you apply in these areas without realising, your application would be terminated before it even has a chance.

Our Town Planners can determine whether your plans fit with the location and character of the area, and we can even advise on other locations if your current choice is not available.

PLANNING A DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION

Securing approval for your place of public worship begins by talking with us, and our expert Project Management team will discuss the rules and regulations surrounding construction of a new facility.

Depending on the size, nature, and impact of your new building project, Development Approval may be required for your new place of public worship if:

A new purpose-built construction is required.
Extensive alterations or additions are required on an existing place of public worship.
You’re considering changing the use of an existing building into a place of public worship.

We’ll take care of this application for you, and prepare all the necessary supporting documents that outline your place of public worship proposal to ensure you achieve approval.

You may have a large volume of people attending your new place of public worship. After all, you want to make it a focal point of your community. So managing your parking and traffic requirements is critical.

At CIVAC, we work with you to manage the size, shape, and flow of your car parking areas and determine how your facility interacts with main roads. Is there adequate parking available? Is there going to be a problem with the current road layout, or is your facility going to interfere with traffic?

We also help you determine whether this increase in traffic will impact the existing traffic flow of the location, or whether it interacts with the current road layout.

Places of public worship generate a lot of activity, so you need to make sure you’ve planned for this and received approval from the local Council.

OTHER APPROVALS TO CONSIDER

Along with a Development Application, there are more specific approvals that places of public worship may need before you can start construction.

You may also be required to apply for:

Construction Certificate. If you’re constructing a new place of public worship, or making major additions or renovations to an existing premises.
Occupation Certificate. An Occupation Certificate is required before you can move in, and demonstrates that every element of your new development is up to code and complies with your approved plans.
Change of Use. If you’re taking occupation of a building that previously wasn’t a place of public worship, Change of Use approval is required to ensure you’ve put the right measures in place to accommodate for different patronage capacities, design and fit-out needs, and neighborhood zoning.
Fire Safety approval. Does the layout, construction, capacity, and fitout all meet fire safety standards?
Noise levels. What levels of noise are expected, or allowed, in your area? What are the specified hours you can operate within?
Approval for signage. You’ll need to apply for approval to install any large-scale external signs, particularly if it’s visible from nearby roadways.
